Winter photography in Yellowstone is planned around light, wildlife behavior, and changing conditions — not a rigid timetable. Shorter daylight hours allow us to focus intentionally from sunrise through sunset, when wildlife activity and winter light are at their best.
We stay flexible and patient, adapting to weather and animal movement to maximize opportunity. A bag lunch in the field keeps us close to the action during peak conditions rather than leaving prime light behind.
Throughout the day, you’ll receive hands-on instruction — from exposure in snow and tracking wildlife behavior to composition and positioning. Each day unfolds differently, and that flexibility is what makes winter photography in Yellowstone both powerful and deeply rewarding.

This workshop is moderately active and accessible to most participants. Most photography takes place near vehicles, with short walks on snow or icy terrain.
Participants should be comfortable:
• Walking short distances in winter conditions
• Entering and exiting vehicles multiple times daily
• Spending extended time outdoors in cold temperatures
We move at a steady, reasonable pace and adjust as needed to ensure safety and comfort.

Winter transforms Yellowstone into a quieter, more deliberate place to photograph. Snow simplifies compositions, wildlife stands out against a clean white backdrop, and cold temperatures create atmospheric steam and soft directional light rarely seen during busier seasons.
With a small group, private snow-coach access, and instruction that adapts to changing conditions, this workshop allows photographers to slow down, work intentionally, and create images that simply aren’t possible at other times of year.
Yellowstone offers extraordinary winter subjects — from iconic wildlife to minimalist landscapes and geothermal features.
Wildlife opportunities may include:
• Bison
• Elk
• Red fox
• Coyotes
• Wolves
• Moose
• Owls
Alongside wildlife, we’ll photograph steam-filled thermal basins, frost-covered trees, frozen rivers, snow-draped landscapes, and dramatic winter light.
As always with wildlife photography, nothing is guaranteed. Animals move freely, and conditions change daily. Our goal is to position you in the best possible opportunities through experience, timing, and patience — while respecting that Yellowstone remains wild and unpredictable.

January in Yellowstone offers one of the most powerful wildlife photography windows of the year. Snow-covered landscapes, active wildlife in Lamar Valley, and dramatic winter light create conditions that simply don’t exist in other seasons — but this window is brief.
Group size is intentionally limited to six photographers to preserve flexibility, comfort, and meaningful time in the field. If photographing wolves, bison, and winter wildlife in their natural habitat has been on your list, this workshop provides rare access during Yellowstone’s most atmospheric season.
